I recently started developing a relationship with the Pineapple as my personal Ancestral Fruit for healing.
My personal relationship with my ancestors is complicated (who's isn't right? lol) and I have started to realize over the past three years since I set the intention to consciously listen to my ancestors, I have received guidance to connect to mother earth, to go back to the simplicity of connecting with whole foods, and to harness their medicinal properties with simple traditional recipes. The thing is, that when I grew up, these medicinal concoctions that my grandmother used to make I took for granted, I mistakingly believed that the simplicity of her methods were too plain to be effective. and that the European methods were "better". Oh, how wrong I was...
It took me to uproot myself from my beloved land of Venezuela and settle in the USA to realize that the further away I waked from my grandmother's way, the sicker I have gotten.
Yet, the whispers came, again, and again "mijita, prepara un guarapo the pina" translation: "my child, prepare a pineapple tea" "mijita, prepara un te de cilantro" translation: "my child, prepare a cilantro tea".
After receiving these messages I started preparing “Guarapo de Pina” a beautiful tea to help you cleanse and detox your body, to my surprise my Indian husband loved it so much that he started purchasing pineapples whenever he went to the store with the intention of making more of this delicious pineapple tea. While this novelty started to develop in my home, that same week, I was guided to go buy a plant at Home Depot, and to my surprise, I got guided towards the bromeliads, where there was a beautiful pineapple plant waiting for me to take home. At that moment, my eyes welled up, I knew, I was being guided by my loving ancestors!
These little synchronicities are awe inspiring moments that remind me of how I carry the love of my ancestors everywhere I go, and that these little nudges are opportunities to deepen my connection to my lineage. to feel grounded in my divine experience on this planet.
As my ancestors are inviting me to lean in to the food they so lovingly consumed over centuries, the foods that kept them healthy and connected to their land. I also invite you to seek your connection to your ancestors with their fruits!
As I continue on this path of healing and getting to know my ancestors, I pray that my beloved ancestors continue to guide me.
“When we consume the piña (pineapple), we are also consuming the light of the sun, the waters of the earth, and the wisdom of our ancestors who cultivated this fruit for generations. Each bite reconnects us to the natural world and the healing energies that flow through all living things. The pineapple is a sacred conduit, reminding us of our place within the delicate web of life. Its sweet nectar nourishes not just the body, but the spirit as well..” - Taino Elder
Here are 5 reasons the pineapple are special to tribes in South America.
The symbolic and ritual significance of pineapples in the cultural practices of indigenous South Americans manifested in several key ways:
Pineapples were often incorporated into religious ceremonies and rituals by Andean cultures like the Inca. They were seen as sacred fruits that connected people to the divine forces of nature. Pineapple motifs were commonly used in religious artwork, textiles, and architectural elements.
Indigenous South Americans attributed various medicinal and restorative properties to pineapples. They were used in traditional herbal remedies and tonics to treat ailments and promote health and vitality. The fruit was often imbued with spiritual healing power.
In many Mesoamerican societies, pineapples were symbols of hospitality, abundance, and elite status. Serving pineapples to guests was a sign of honor and wealth. Pineapple motifs were used to decorate the homes of nobility and in ceremonial contexts.
Pineapples were sometimes linked to celestial bodies, natural cycles, and creation myths in the belief systems of indigenous groups. The fruit's crown-like shape and golden color associated it with the sun, moon, and other sacred elements of the cosmos.
The cultivation, harvesting, and consumption of pineapples were deeply woven into the cultural practices and collective identities of many South American indigenous peoples. Pineapples held profound social and communal significance.
Through these diverse ritual, spiritual, and symbolic uses, the pineapple became deeply embedded in the cultural worldviews and lifeways of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations prior to European contact.
